Up to Bat, Time to Tailgate

Celebrate the baseball season in style.

To be honest, it really isn’t spring for me until the baseball season starts. I love sitting at a bar and grill with the game on in the background or barbequing on the back porch with the radio on. However, nothing compares to being in the stadium, soaking up the electricity in the atmosphere and cheering on your favorite team (the Cardinals, of course)! But who says you can’t have the perks of both? Why should tailgating be reserved for football? First and foremost, you need a grill. Start your shopping trip at Target and check out the Weber Go-Anywhere charcoal grill for $44.99. If you prefer gas over charcoal, take a good look at the miGrill Gas Grill. For $129.99, you get a snazzy modular design that comes with built-in speakers! Enjoy…

Get That Spring Feeling

Pull the colors and motifs of spring into your home without completely redecorating.

Anxious for the grass to start growing green again? Finding yourself wishing for the first dandelion to sprout just for some inkling that winter is finally over? If you’re as impatient as I am, wishing for a summer full of pulling weeds just so I can get out of the cold and snow state of mind, don’t worry! Accessorize your home with spring-inspired items to get your fix until high temperatures in the 70’s become a regular thing again. Let’s start with the bedroom. I was having a very hard time dragging myself out of bed on Monday seeing those gray skies and snow-covered roads. All that did was make me cranky the rest of the day. So, don’t be like me! Start your day off on the right side of the bed with a new bedding set in sunny shades and…

Spring Cleaning: Get the Bathroom Squeaky Clean

Tackle the catch-all space beneath your sink while making more room in a small space.

I’ll be honest, the bathroom is the last place I like to clean, not least because I can never throw any medicine, nail polish, shower gel, or scented candles away. Wet towels often stay damp, and dust collects on your toothbrushes. You might be surprised how a few storage fixtures can help when it comes to organizing your bathroom. Start by clearing off the vanity. I personally don’t like having anything except for soap on top since I’m a little of a germ freak. But what if you don’t want to lose your mirror for storage space? Don’t worry about it! Go to Wal-Mart and pick up the Classy Collection Medicine Cabinet that’s both a cabinet and mirror for $70.13. Anything too big to stash in a cabinet this size you can of course stow under the …

Spring Cleaning: It's Time to Attack That Closet

If you've got two-year-old clothes with the tags still attached or shoes that only went with one outfit you no longer own, it's time to clean up!

The closet is another one of those places that's a catch all. Don't want to stash it in the garage or basement? It usually goes in the bedroom closet. And that's not including all the clothes, shoes, and accessories that are supposed to reside there. But where to start, with clutter blocking the doors and spilling off the shelves? Generally, and mostly from personal preference, I like to start from scratch when it comes to cleaning. I have to make a mess before things can be clean; everything goes on the floor before a space can get really organized, in my opinion. While there are a lot of approaches to fixing up an area, I do recommend this for your closet, as knowing what you have in your wardrobe is key to its cleanliness. You've …

You are so right.. You have to create a mess to clean up the clutter.. I remove nearly everything out of my closet into my bedroom, vacuum and knock down any cobwebs (and last year, I gave the closet walls a fresh coat of paint) and then did as you suggested with going through my clothes.. Nice article Kathryn.   more ›

Valentine's Day Shopping for the Casual Couple

Check out these gift ideas for those of you just starting down the Road to Romance.

If you’re in a new relationship and faced with the obligation of romantic gift-giving that the Valentines holiday represents, it’s easy to understand that you might be uncomfortable searching for a thoughtful and cute gift that’s just appropriate enough for someone you’re getting to know. The last thing you want to do at this point in a relationship is to scare someone off with an engagement-like ring or personalized his and hers towels. So what does the shopping guru recommend for this situation? Really, it doesn’t have to be that hard. Just think of everyday things. Start with a nice photo of the two of you. You’ve probably got a load of candid pictures on your phone already, right? Print and frame (or, for a nicer finish, take your …

The Return of the Misfit Toys

Why do some Christmas gifts end up going back to the store?

Don't be embarrassed to admit it: everyone has opened a present at Christmas with the gleam of anticipation in their eyes only to plaster on a fake smile as the item is revealed. But what causes the need for insincere exclamations and thanks? I ventured to The Meadows one post-holiday afternoon to find out. After camping outside bigger venues like Von Maur and Bed Bath & Beyond, I was able to compile a list of the most common reasons for returns and exchanges. Wrong Size When you're trying to surprise someone with a new pair of shoes or clothing, it's hard to keep up the mystery when you have to ask them what size they wear. Some people think it's rude to ask sizes in the first place. So, a lot of what made a trip back to the store was …

Christmas Shopping for the Last Minute Gift

Or, Christmas shopping for the hard-to-shop-for person on your list.

Don't you love how some people, when asked for a Christmas gift suggestion, respond with a throw-away statement like, "Oh, you don't have to give me anything," or "I'm sure I'll like whatever you get me?"  I'm not saying we don't appreciate that these people are trying to save us time and effort, but generally they end up at the back of the shopping list as we try to think of something useful or thoughtful through the end of December. If you're shopping for someone guilty of this holiday time crime, or perhaps you suddenly have an office Christmas party to shop for, read on.  Fill in the blank  It's hard to find someone who doesn't take pictures on a regular basis nowadays, so it's a pretty safe bet to pick up a decorative frame or photo …

Christmas Shopping for the Couple

Bring your favorite pair closer together this season with a thoughtful gift.

You can't buy love, and you can't buy time, but you can do the next best thing.  Give your favorite couple the excuse to spend time together, and you've basically bought them a date!  Start with the sauce.  Visit Baker's Wine and Spirits for a selection of tasty beverages, from the mainstream to more specialized and unique products.  It's hard to go wrong with wine or sparkling wine, but Baker's doesn't neglect the hop-head.  Abandon the Bud and Michelob for a richer ale or lager.  Collect your mixed drink needs here as well.  It might not be 70 degrees and sunny outside at the moment, but you can encourage future outdoor excursions by picking them up a picnic basket.  You can combine your purchase from Baker's with Bed Bath & Beyond's …
