In Des Peres last week, a handful of cars and homes were burglarized in a residential neighborhood—a serious enough "spree" that the city blasted an email and text alert to the neighborhoods. As it happens, the burglar got into some unlocked cars, used the garage door opener and walked into a pair of houses in which the inside door was not locked. The report brought on this comment from a reader: "A person would not lock their car outside overnight (or anytime) because? And with a home garage door opener and valuables inside? Is this laziness or stupidity?" Another reader who said she was was one of the victims took offense: "I hope you are never a victim. You are acting like it was our fault." What do you think? St. Charles County Sheriff's investigators said Matthew Burnett, of Lake Saint Louis, broke into a home and sexually touched a 13-year-old girl.
A man previously charged with burglary has been indicted on child molestation charges in the same incident on Dec. 12. Matthew Burnett, of the 200 block of Shade Tree Court in Lake Saint Louis, was indicted April 5 by a St. Charles grand jury on two counts of child molestation and one count of second-degree burglary. Patch reported earlier that Burnett is accused of breaking into a St. Charles County home near Wentzville Dec. 12. According to a Sheriff’s Department report, Burnett and Robert Mohrmann, 54, of the first block of Warsen Avenue, kicked in the door to the home. Two young girls ages 13 and 6 were in the home. The vehicle might be connected to the theft of $3000 of electronics and tools from a RV storage facility.
The Wentzville Police Department is asking for help in locating a 1990s model red Jeep Cherokee that may be involved in several burglaries at a storage facility. The burglaries occurred between 8 p.m. Sat., March 30 and 1:30 a.m., Sun., March 31, at Safe Lock Storage and RV Storage on Continental Drive, near the I-70/Hwy. 61 interchange. Police say $3000 worth of electronics and tools were stolen. Surveillance video shows a heavily-built male suspect and a second suspect of lighter build that could be a man or a woman. The Jeep seen in the surveillance footage has a large Grateful Dead sticker in the back window. St. Louis County Police said the gun had been stolen hours earlier in a burglary.
A Foristell man faces stealing charges after throwing a handgun out a car window Feb. 1 as St. Louis County Police pulled the car over. Daniel A. Jones, 30, of the 100 block of Intrepid Avenue in Foristell, was charged Feb. 2 with receiving stolen property. St. Louis County Police said they were pulling a car over Feb. 1 when Jones, a passenger in the car, threw a revolver out of the window on Interstate 55 near Bayless Avenue in South County. Police said the handgun had been stolen in a burglary hours earlier. Jones was being held Wednesday in St. Louis County jail. Bail was set at $35,000, cash only. Just hours after he was released from police custody on a burglary charge, Wentzville Police arrested a Warrenton man Dec. 23 for stealing a car. Lucas R. Allen, 30, of the 600 block of Third Street in Warrenton, was charged Wednesday with first-degree burglary and theft. During the early morning hours Dec. 23, Allen went into a back room labeled “Employees only” at the Amoco gas station at 1450 South Service Road, Wentzville Police said. An employee called to him that he was not allowed back there, but he ignored her. While in the back room, he put a bottle of Crown Royal whiskey in his pocket and left, police said. Two men kicked in a door to burglarize a house in the first block of Warsen Avenue near Wentzville on Wednesday and found two children at home, police said. Robert Mohrmann, 54, of the first block of Warsen Avenue, and Matthew Burnett, of the 200 block of Shade Tree Court in Lake Saint Louis, were both charged Thursday with first-degree burglary. A St. Charles County Sheriff’s deputy said that after kicking in the door, Burnett searched the house even after he saw that a girl was home. Two children were in the home, a 13-year-old and a 6-year-old girl. Mohrmann, who lives down the street from the house, told the deputy he left after he saw the girl in the home. Four St. Charles businesses near King Edward's Fried Chicken on South Duchesne were burglarized Nov. 11 and 12.
A 24-year-old Wentzville-area man was charged Tuesday with the burglary of King Edward's Fried Chicken earlier this week. Four businesses located near King Edward's Fried Chicken in the 1200 block of South Duchesne were burglarized between Nov. 11 and 12. Police arrested Dallas Thomas, of the first block of Taylor in Wentzville. He was charged with burglary, property damage and attempted stealing on Wednesday. Video surveillance at two locations helped police identify Thomas, according to police. Police are still investigating the burglaries at the other businesses, and for possible connections to other burglaries in St. Charles and Wentzville. A Wentzville woman faces criminal charges after police said she and another person broke into her neighbor’s apartment and stole an Xbox 360 game console. Karen Carter, of the 1100 block of Evergreen Court in Wentzville, was charged Friday with second-degree burglary and misdemeanor theft. Wentzville Police said Carter and another person entered another apartment in the 1100 block of Evergreen Court and stole the Xbox 360 and a cable. They then sold it to a pawnshop for $70, police said. Bail for Carter was set at $10,000 with the condition that she have no contact with her co-defendant. Agreed. Just because a thief or vandal else clearly does wrong, does not mean the victim is necessarily "right" or blameless. It also doesn't mean they have equal blame or most of it. Such black and white thinking on this board. Sometimes victims couldn't have done anything better. Sometimes we can all learn something from the situation...like locking things up and keeping valuables out of sight.   more ›
