Candidate for Aldermen Withdraws from Race After Comments at Board Meeting

John Zepaltas had previously filed for candidacy for Ward 3.

After Wednesday night's regular meeting, a candidate for Ward 3 Alderman was recorded on city video making comments to staff members that may have resulted in his withdrawing his candidacy. John Zepaltas, who had filed for candidacy last month, approached city staff after the regular meeting was over and the aldermen and mayor had left the board room. Zepaltis was upset about the cost overruns for the Splash Station project. He asked how the project got past planners. The city's video camera was still running, and although he was off-camera, Zepaltas can be heard to say, "Mr. Kolb disappointed the hell out of me." He said that if that was the way that projects are administered, the procedures needed to be changed. "I am just pissed," …

A Nixon White House in 2016? Possible, Some Pundits Say

It's a bit early, but Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon's name is being bandied about as part of a Democratic ticket in 2016.

But national media have since picked up on the fact that Nixon, a Democrat, has turned up the ability to appeal to Republicans as part of this year's re-election effort, as chronicled by the Huffington Post. “I think if Gov. Nixon were to run for president in 2016, he would use the Bill Clinton model from 1992 and run as a centrist or moderate,” said David Kimball, professor of political science at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. Others …

Brunner: 'Our Nation Depends on Outcome of This Senate Race'

John Brunner spoke to a group at Pio's in St. Charles on Tuesday.

Republican U.S. Senate hopeful John Brunner positioned himself as the strongest contender in the field while speaking to a small crowd at Pio's in St. Charles Tuesday afternoon. "We've got to engage in this battle. We're under tremendous attack," he said. "The nation depends on winning this Senate race. The strongest candidate has to survive this race. The candidate who has strong values and principles." Brunner is one of eight Republicans are hoping to win the nomination, although just three contendors have launched a legitimate statewide bid. Brunner, former State Treasurer Sarah Steelman and Congressman Todd Akin are spending the next few weeks trying to draw distinctions between one another. Several have noted few policy differences …
