Utility Tax Rebate Program Application Period Opens April 1

Lake Saint Louis seniors and disabled residents have two months to apply for electric/gas tax rebates.

Lake Saint Louis' utility tax rebate program for seniors and disabled residents will begin taking applications on April 1. The application period ends on May 31, 2011. Eligible residents include senior citizens with a limited income and residents considered by Social Security to be totally disabled with a limited income.  Additional requirements include residency within the city limits of Lake Saint Louis during calendar year 2010, and having paid for electric or gas service during that time.  This is the third year of the tax rebate program in Lake Saint Louis, according to Renee Roettger, Lake Saint Louis city finance director. In its first year, 2009, the city made 46 payments with an average payment of $80.55. The total amount rebated …

Lake Saint Louis Live Blog Tonight from City Hall

Watch this space for continuing live updates from tonight's meetings at city hall: 5:30 p.m. public works session, 7:00 p.m. Board of Aldermen meeting. Discussion began about the mid-year budget. City Administrator Paul Markworth said that the city is seeing increasing in francise fees. Sales tax was down in November, but December sales taxes were up $64,000 over what was budgeted. Emergency purchases of salt were not reflected in the current budget. Harry Slyman asked if more should be budgeted for attorney fees, with the city currently involved in two lawsuits. He asked for $40,000 to be budgeted instead of $20,000. Markworth asked the board to consider more money for repair overlays to concrete streets in the city. In looking at future …

Alderman Candidate Profile: Charles Koviak

Patch spoke with alderman candidate Charles Koviak to get the run down on his pre-election strategy.

As the first of an ongoing profile feature on the candidates on the April ballot,  Lake Saint Louis Patch chose long-time resident Charles Koviak. Koviak is running for Ward 3 alderman against incumbent George Rich, but he's no stranger to the city. "I've been a resident of Lake Saint Louis since the late 1960's," Koviak said. When asked why he's decided to run for Alderman now he said, "It seems like the right time and place. The city's doing well but fresh blood never hurt. I don't want the city to come to a stalemate. I just feel there's always room for improvement." UPDATE: Lake Saint Louis Patch received this from City Administrator Paul Markworth today: "I misspoke last night when talking about the city's rebate program. I said it was a real estate tax rebate but it is actually a utility tax rebate.  Renee is preparing information people will need in order to submit a rebate claim.  The state of Missouri has a Homested tax rebate program for real estate." Still Time to File for April Election

Of the three incumbents running, so far only one alderman has a challenger.

During Lake Saint Louis' municipal election on Tuesday, April 5, residents will be voting on one alderman from each of the city's three wards. Filing for that election opened on Dec. 14. To date, all three incumbents have filed for the chance to keep their seats on the Board of Aldermen. Harry Slyman, Ward I, and Kathy Schweikert, Ward II, have no competition as yet. In Ward III, incumbent George Rich is joined on the ballot by Charles D. Koviak. Filing will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011. An aldermen must be at least 21 years old, a U.S citizen, must have been a resident of the city for at least one year, and must live in the city during his/her term, if elected.
