Timberland had just two golfers in school history reach the state meet, but sent five in 2011.
For Holt and Timberland, this past spring golf season brought both optimism and varying degrees of expectations — and both schools had some things to talk about once the season came to an end. “They certainly exceeded my expectations I had prior to the season,” Timberland head coach Kyle Lindquist said. “I knew we were extremely young, one of the youngest teams in the state, and with three sophomores and two freshmen going to state we were by far the youngest team to qualify.” Prior to this season, Timberland had seen just two golfers in school history get to state, one of which came last year. Consistency was one of Holt senior golfer Corey Robertson's biggest strengths throughout this season.
Holt High School senior Corey Robertson was hoping to come home from Springfield with a state medal. Robertson came up just short of achieving that goal, finishing 19th at the state Class 4 Meet at Twin Oaks Country Club on Monday and Tuesday (the top 15 earn a medal). "I missed by just two strokes," Robertson said. "When you do that you play back in your mind two strokes you left out on the course. But overall I was happy with the way I played." Robertson should be pleased as he was the second-best finisher from St. Charles County (Francis Howell's Mike Wooten won the individual championship). Timberland qualifies five golfers for the state tournament in Springfield on May 16-17.
The Timberland golf team will have an opportunity to make a major impact at the state golf meet. The Wolves qualified five golfers at the Class 4 Sectional 2 boys golf tournament at Old Hickory Golf Club in St. Peter’s. The state qualifiers are Ryan Keller, Zach Cutler, Jackson Lane, Joshua O'Hearn and Jonathan Roberson. Keller shot an 8-over to place fourth overall. Golfers had to place in the top-12 to qualify for state.
