Students Honored for Science, Technology Achievements

Partners for Progress' annual STEM awards pick out some of the best students in science, technology, engineering and math in St. Charles County, including three Wentzville students.

Seventeen St. Charles County students were recognized for their achievements during Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) recognition breakfast Friday at the Old Hickory Golf Club in St. Peters. The event is sponsored by Partners for Progress of Greater St. Charles. Students recognized at the event were: Holt High School junior Savannah Est and Bauer also were recognized for placing in the Missouri’s Tri-County Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at St. Charles Community College on Feb. 25. Est took first place, and will travel to international science fairs in Pittsburgh and Houston with her project, “Optimization of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells." Bauer placed third at the event. Partners for Progress Honors Students for Science, Technology Accomplishment

STEM breakfast speakers emphasize importance of science, technology, engineering, math studies.

A robot affectionately called “Chum Chucker” spit out soccer balls, surrounded by the orange-shirted River City Robots team that created it. Nearby, younger students in the First Lego League knelt on the floor worked remotes controlling smaller robots that cruised the floor at Old Hickory Golf Course Country Club in St. Peters. “We get an assignment and then we have six weeks to build it,” said Elizabeth Stearns, a senior and a home-schooled student from St. Charles who participates in the robotics program. The team participates in international competitions. Chum Chucker was last year’s entry in the competition. Wentzville Students Compete in Science, Engineering Fair

Regional fair was held at St. Charles Community College.

Students from the Wentzville R-IV School District competed in Missouri’s Tri-County Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at St. Charles Community College on Saturday, Feb. 26. At the end of the day, 57 Wentzville students and six classrooms were recognized for their efforts, including 22 first place awards. Holt High School Senior Katie Larkin received an overall first place in the High School Honors Division for her project “Identification of the Source of Indeterminate DNA in Fluorescence Assays of Sterile Seed Corn” and will advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles on May 7-14. Larkin was also the recipient of the Stockholm Water Award and both the Navy and Air Force Research Awards for her project …
