June is busting out all . . . no wait, that's not right. April showers bring May flowers . . . nope, not right either. What can we say about the beautiful spring weather that has March both coming in and going out "like a lamb?" How about "Grab your camera and go get some great pictures for Patch!" Whether you've got pink Redbuds or white-blossomed dogwoods, a big fragrant lilac bush or Easter egg-colored hyacinths, bright yellow daffodils or tulips as red as our beloved Cardinals, post your pictures here so we can all enjoy watching Lake Saint Louis bloom.

Members of Lake Saint Louis' Jardin du Lac participated in a flower show hosted by Wine Country Gardens in Defiance.
Federated Garden Clubs of America, Mid-Central District held their flower show last Tuesday at Wine Country Gardens in Defiance, Mo. The public is always welcome to view the show. Participating were members of the following garden clubs: Owensville, Sullivan, O’Fallon, Boone Country, Cuba Hills, First Capitol, Fleur de Lis, Jardin du Lac, and Lewis & Clark. In the Horticulture Division, a cut specimen of a garden flower, or a leaf or stem of a plant whether it is a bulb, tuber, rhizome, ground cover, hardy fern, hosta, perennial, rose or arboreal branch will be displayed individually in a clear glass bottle containing water. A perfect specimen on one of these plants is selected and then entered into the judging of the show. Many different …

Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother's Day in 1908, quickly became disgusted with the commercialization of the holiday, especially by the floral industry. She tried to stop a 1923 Mother's Day event and petitioned against a Mother's Day stamp that featured a vase of white carnations. Plant the right early-blooming cultivar for spectacular spring color.
You know spring has finally arrived when the yellow Forsythia bushes begin to bloom. This large bush should be allowed to grow naturally because the branches arch out and look like a firework exploded in springtime. If they are pruned too late in the fall, after August, you will have removed the following spring season’s flower buds. There are new shorter Forsythia cultivar’s available if you want the spring color but don’t want it to get too tall that it requires pruning. ‘Golden Peep,’ and ‘Gold Tide’ will reach a mature height of 30 inches.
