Athlete of the Week: Howell Central's Travis Vaught Wins Top Honors

Francis Howell Central's Travis Vaught wins the "Patch" Athlete of the Week Award.

Travis Vaught had a big week on the baseball diamond for the Howell Central Spartans last week. He did even better in the Athlete of the Week voting. Vaught trounced the field in the St. Charles County Patch Athlete of the Week poll. Out of the nearly 400 votes cast, Vaught picked up a whopping 96 percent to easily win the award.  Here's how the voting went down. Who was the St. Charles County baseball player of the week beginning on April 23? Total votes: 391 -- Vaught did it all last week for the Spartans. Vaught opened the week on April 24 with a stat-filling performance. In Howell Central's 8-3 win, Vaught was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Another week is in the books, which means it's time for another chance to find St. Charles County's Athlete of the Week. This week, we turn our attention to the baseball diamond. Here are the nominees for the St. Charles County baseball player of the week for the week of April 23: Travis Vaught—Francis Howell Central: The Spartans Travis Vaught did it all last week. Vaught opened the week on April 24 with a stat-filling performance. In Howell Central's 8-3 win, Vaught was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Zumwalt South's Stewart Sisters Combine for Big Week

Bridget and Shannon Stewart win the St. Charles County Athlete of the Week after a dominating showing on the soccer field.

The Stewart sisters can't be stopped. Fort Zumwalt South's Bridget and Shannon Stewart have been terrorizing goalies across St. Charles County this season to help the Bulldogs win some games. However, that's not the only thing the duo has been winning. With an impressive 73 percent of the vote, Bridget and Shannon became the first co-winners of the St. Charles County Patch Athlete of the Week. The Stewarts defeated the field with 2,577 votes. The girls soccer season continues on in St. Charles County and several players had big weeks. Some starred with numerous goals, some just managed to score timely goals. For others it was all about goal prevention.  Here are the nominees for the St. Charles County girls soccer player of the week for the week of April 16:  Bridget and Shannon Stewart—Fort Zumwalt South: The Stewart sisters from Fort Zumwalt South had quite a productive week for the Bulldogs soccer team. So productive, in fact, that it's impossible to split up Bridget and Shannon. The Bulldogs went 3-0 last week with and scored a total 10 goals. The Stewarts combined for eight of the goals. Shannon had a three-game goal scoring streak and put up four goals (one game winner) …

Howell North's Braxton Martinez Picks Up Athlete of the Week Award

Francis Howell North's Braxton Martinez won the fan choice for Patch's Athlete of the Week.

Braxton Martinez has been punishing pitchers around St. Charles County this season.  The Francis Howell North product is a hitting star this season for the Knights and the fans have taken notice. In our Athlete of the Week poll, Martinez was the top vote getter. With 48 of the 74 votes (64 percent), Martinez won the top honors in our fan's choice for best baseball player so far this season.  Here's how the voting went down:  Total votes: 74 votes Martinez, who will be attending Saint Louis University in the fall, has been tearing things up so far this season for the Knights. He's hitting .543 (19-for-35) with seven doubles, one homer and 16 RBIs. He's also scored 18 runs this season for the Howell North.  *** Patch wants to thank everyone …

One of the sure-fire signs of spring, besides sneezing fits for those inflicted with seasonal allergies, is baseball. Diamonds all across St. Charles County has been busy in the early part of the high school baseball season. Even though the season is just two weeks old, plenty of action has taken place on the field. This week, we're asking you Patch readers to decide which baseball player around the County has had the biggest impact in the early part of the season.  The nominees are:  Ryan March—Fort Zumwalt East: The month of March was very good for Mr. March. Fort Zumwalt East's Ryan March excelled with the bat and on the mound for the Lions. While toeing the rubber, March compiled a 2-1 record with a sparkling 0.95 ERA—he's given up …

Holt Winter Guard Takes Top Prize in Regional Competition

The MCCGA is a winter color guard and percussion circuit serving independent and scholastic guards and percussion lines from Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Iowa.

The Holt High School Winter Guard Unit took first place in the Regional A division at the Mid-Continent Color Guard Association (MCCGA) contest held earlier this month in Hillsboro. The Indian Guard outperformed six other units with a score of 74.9 to win the title. Following the festival weekend, the Holt Winter Guard was promoted from Regional A to Scholastic C based on their outstanding performance. The guard is comprised of 16 Holt students and their 2012 show is “Falling in Love,” performed to the music of Jessica Andrews. The unit is directed by Jim Cunningham, with assistance from Kim Kras, Anna Trask, Duane Williams and Mary Barcroft. Boys Basketball: Holt Advances to District Finals, Timberland Falls Short

The Holt High School boys basketball team used a 21-6 first quarter edge to help vault them into the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 5, District 6 finals Wednesday with a 63-59 win over Francis Howell. The Indians won behind a stellar performance from sophomore guard Justin Davis, who shot 7-for-11 from the field for 17 points. Davis connected on 3-of-4 3-pointers, swiped five steals and dished five assists in the win.  Brett Smith also chipped in with 15 points while Phillip Love scored 13 points and Mike Carter scored 11 points. With Heroin Use on the Rise, Holt Hosts Town Hall Meeting

Heroin use resulted in more than 200 overdose deaths in the St. Louis area in 2010.

The Wentzville School District will be hosting a Heroin Town Hall Forum Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Auditorium at Holt High School in Wentzville. The event is organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (NCADA) and local law enforcement agencies. This forum is the latest in a series of similar town hall meetings throughout the region. The increased use of heroin in the greater St. Louis-area has grown to alarming proportions and resulted in more than 200 overdose deaths in the St. Louis-area in 2010. These forums are intended to provide useful information for communities in order to proactively confront the dangerous epidemic of heroin and prescription painkiller use by St. Louis-area teens. Girls Soccer: Ireland Signs to Play at Central Missouri

The senior midfielder scored nine goals this season and was named to the second team all-conference squad.

Holt High School midfielder Julie Ireland has committed to play college soccer at the University of Central Missouri in Warensburg next season, school officials announced Thursday. With her mother by her side, Ireland signed her national letter of intent at Holt High School Thursday. This season, Ireland helped lead the Lady Indians in scoring with nine goals and was named to the All-Conference second team for the past two years.
