Remember Fire Safety During the Holidays

Holiday decorations, candles, Christmas trees and cooking all increase risk for residential fires.

JEFFERSON CITY – State Fire Marshal Randy Cole urges Missourians to remember fire safety as they gather with family and friends to celebrate the holidays. Each year across the U.S., fire departments respond to an average of 240 residential fires caused by Christmas trees alone, according to the National Fire Protection Association. “Around the country, residential fires generally increase in December,” said Cole. “As temperatures drop, people are heating their homes and spending more time indoors. In addition, the holiday season means decorations, celebrations and an increase in indoor cooking, all of which increase the potential for a fire.” Candles are another potential fire hazard that many incorporate into their holiday decorations. …

Don't Forget to Water That Tree!

A tree that is kept watered is a much safer tree.

We're just a few days out from Christmas. By now, the excitement of having the tree up and decorated has lost out to the excitement of shopping, wrapping presents and planning the holiday feast. If your family is like mine, watering the tree has gradually moved to the bottom of your "I've got to get this done today" list. Don't let it happen! The National Institute for Standards and Technology has produced this video to show just how much of a fire hazard that dried-out tree will become.
