Friends of Wentzville Parks Foots Bill for Children to Play

Group also commits funds for basketball court at Progress Park, a batting cages and Easter egg prizes.

Friends of Wentzville Parks will pay so kids can play. Wentzville Parks Director Mary Jo Dessieux told the city’s Park Board Monday that not-for-profit parks group will provide $2,500 in scholarship money so underprivileged children can play in city-run sports leagues.  “We’re creating an environment of inclusion where no child will be turned away, whether they’re from a family on hard times,” Greg Younger, president of Friends of Wentzville Parks, told Patch before the meeting. “We’re providing the scholarships so no child is refused an opportunity to play soccer, baseball or any other sport the city offers,” he said. “The scholarship has grown each year,” Dessieux said. “The first year, it was $900, it was $1,100 the next, and it was $2,…

City Holding Naming Contest for Newest Park

New unnamed park located between Holt High School and Heritage Elementary.

Want to put your stamp on the Wentzville landscape for decades to come?  All you need is a green thumb and a little creativity. The city is holding a naming contest for its newest park, located at 200 W. Northview Ave. between Holt High School and Heritage Primary Elementary School. The park was created after the city completed its storm water project to provide flood relief. The project also created a green space that will become a new park. From the city's website: The naming of this site should be inspired by the natural features and/or relationship to storm water benefits. This site will function as an outdoor class room for local schools, a pocket park within the neighborhood, and a quiet respite for nature lovers. For more on the …

New Trails System Could Link Wentzville, Lake Saint Louis and O'Fallon

Plan would add dozens of miles in new trails and cost the city $20 million.

Wentzville residents might soon be able to commute from their home on the west end of town to various retail stores along Wentzville Parkway and then on to visit friends in Lake Saint Louis and O'Fallon—all by walking—if park officials get their way. Mary Jo Dessieux, director of the Wentzville Parks and Recreation Department, outlined an ambitious trails plan at the city's park board meeting this week that would add dozens of new miles in walking ways throughout Wentzville. Dessieux said the goal is to enhance transportation and fitness infrastructure in Wentzville, O'Fallon and Lake Saint Louis.  "We want to put in trails that will not only link neighborhoods, but link parks and the retail area," she said. "So someday, we want for …

Timberland Students Paint Propane Pig

Recycled art piece to be featured at the educational Nature Explore Classroom at Towne Park.

Art students at Timberland High School teamed up with the St. Charles County Parks Department to paint the pig.  And it's not what you think. It was a pig formed out of a recycled propane tank. “The tank washed up onto one of our parks by the river,” said Ben Grossman, Natural Resource Supervisor for the Parks Department. “We’re creating a lot of items out of recycled materials, and the pig will eventually be a feature in our Nature Explore Classroom.” Fine Arts Department Chair Crystal Wing and the Timberland Art Club accepted the challenge of decorating the 200 pound piece of art. “We came up with the theme ‘When pigs fly,' so we put the sky and the clouds on it, and we decided any of our students could paint a symbol that represented …

Friends of Wentzville Parks to fund majority of scholarships.

The Wentzville Parks and Recreation Department will create a new scholarship program aimed at helping families with temporary or unique financial hardships, thanks to action taken by the city's park board Monday evening. The program, named the We P.L.A.Y. Scholarships (Wentzville Providing Assistance for Youth), will cover the costs for all of the parks department's pre-registered programs; youth or family membership passes for any or all parks facilities; and programs offered and sponsored solely by the city. The scholarship will not cover programs where pre-registration is not required, facility rentals or contractual and co-sponsored events. The scholarships' value could range anywhere $2 to $120, depending on the program offered, said …

GM, Sam's Club and Parks Top Mayor's State of the City Address

“In 2012, this city is going to build like we haven’t seen in 10 years,” Lambi said.

In his state of the city address, Wentzville Mayor Paul Lambi painted a picture of a city coming out of an economic downturn, led re-investment in the Wentzville plant by General Motors and an additional 1,260 jobs. Lambi gave his address during the Wentzville Chamber of Commerce meeting Wednesday at CenturyLink. (His PowerPoint presentation is available under this article’s photos section). “One thing we’ve seen, since General Motors made their announcement for their $380 million re-investment for addition of the Colorado pickup line, we’re starting to see developers and stockholders buy up land. We think that has had a big affect on stabilizing real estate prices, at least in our area and perhaps the entire county.” Lambi said each of …

Wentzville Holds Fifth Annual Soapbox Derby

Kids raced down Meyer Road in a gravity-fueled car.

More than 90 children participated in the City of Wentzville's annual soapbox derby this year. The race was held Sunday. Kids signed up to race down Meyer Road near Progress Park in a small car, fueled by gravity alone. Parks and Recreation staff posted the race times, but Parks Director Mary Jo Dessieux said Wentzville Parks wanted to make sure every kid felt like a winner. Kids who entered the race had their names put in a drawing to win one of several prizes. The prizes were things like digital cameras, flat screen TV's, and gift cards to local business. Wentzville's soapbox race won the "Best New Program" award from the Missouri Parks and Recreation Association in 2008.

With pavilions, playgrounds and water features, the new community park has a lot to offer.

Dardenne Prairie's new community park will feature a bandstand and amphitheater with fountains and a waterfall, a picnic pavilion and two playgrounds, a slide from the upper features to the lower features and a concession with a patio. The patio will also have a water feature, a "spray ground" with water jets squirting randomly. Dardenne Prairie is offering naming rights to the various park features as well as landscaping beds, and is planning a grand opening of the park at its Sept. 17 Prairie Day celebration.
