Our panel of experts are waiting in the comments to answer all your questions about wine in the latest installment of Ask the Patch Pro.

It's time for another edition of Ask the Patch Pro, where each week we tackle a different topic and open up the comments section for questions. Our team of experts stop in to help you out and answer your questions. This week we're talking about wine. What types of wine are sweetest? Which ones pair best with certain foods? How long should you let red wines breathe? Whether you're planning a party or just want to learn more about one of your favorite drinks, Patch wants to help you get your questions answered. But we needed some help. We don't have the answers to those (and your) questions, but not to worry. Replying here to Tamara's question... The vast majority of wine enthusiasts are more than willing to share what they know about wine and spread the hobby, especially with people who are just getting started in their love of wine or even people who aren't that interested in the long term and are just trying to figure out which bottle they should have with their next meal. As such, in my opinion, …   more ›

Phone Stacking Game Finds Followers in St. Louis Area

The new hot trend in dining has nothing to do with food.

We've all done it. Here’s my story: Last week, I was waiting for the boyfriend to arrive for our sushi date. Bored, I watched couples at the tables around me, but one in particular caught my eye. Two young women with full plates of tempura and bright pink-and-green cocktails spent their entire meal engrossed in (not each other, not their food, not their drinks, but...) their phones. I swear they hardly said a word to each other the entire 45 minutes I was waiting. (I was super early, he was a little late. Typical.) As they left and the boyfriend arrived, I filled him in on the their ghastly behavior, my voice dripping with judgment. After dinner, as we sat a bar waiting for our movie to start, I was halfway into a work email when my …

Chowdown Showdown

Where Is the Best Soup in St. Charles County?

The St. Charles County Patch sites want you to vote by commenting below.

Welcome to "Chowdown Showdown," a feature to help us locate the best foodie finds in St. Charles County. And we're leaving the decision to you, our readers. Each week, we will ask you to tell us your favorite place to get a cup of coffee or a burger or breakfast.  The weather's been pretty mild the last few days, but you know we'll be seeing our share of snow and ice and bone-chilling temperatures before winter's over. And when it comes to wintertime comfort food, what's better than a steaming bowl of soup? Tomato, potato, chowder, gazpacho, consommé or good ol' chicken noodle—nothing's like soup to take the chill out of your bones after a few hours of shoveling snow. Where do you go in St. Charles County for a great bowl of soup? You can …

Food Adventures 101: Reap the Spices of Your Labor

El Maguey in Lake Saint Louis gave me the insider's scoop on truly spicy salsa.

Having recently moved from New Mexico (ok, it's been seven months to be fair), I've found myself feverishly searching for some semblence of spicy food. To define the term "spicy," I would say, if it doesn't make you choke up or tear up it's not hot enough. Spicy food should not only consist of heat, however. It should also knock you out with flavor, whether roasted, fruity, citrus or otherwise. In an ideal world there is a beautiful balance to be obtained. In Missouri you can find spicy elements in many different ethnic cuisines, though of course the most comparable here is Mexican. One thing many people don't realize is that Mexican and New Mexican food are not the same. New Mexican food is a medley of Mexican, Native American and Spanish…

Sour cream cuts the fire. Milk cuts the fire. Water does not - tortillas can cut the firey tastes. Again - don't turn away from Mexican food - an authentic Mexican restaurant does NOT add chili powder and hot spices to every dish with no other options. American based Mexican chains seem to think everything has to have chili powder flavor. - They will usually inform the customer about what is …   more ›

This Week in Lake Saint Louis

A little bit more than just snow happened in Lake Saint Louis this week.

Monday was filled with snow-related news, from the Wentzville R-IV School District releasing students early, to local garbage trucks being sent into ditches by treacherous ice and snow, and warnings from weather services about a "Perfect Storm" with thunder snow and power outages. We were given five important phone numbers incase of snow emergencies on Tuesday. MoDOT urged people to stay home during the storm that had been predicted to drop as much as a foot of snow on the area, but left some areas suffering more from sleet and freezing rain. Peggy Bahrmasel gave tips on how to prevent ice damage to trees in her Advice Around The Garden Column. With ice-packed roads and single-digit temperatures, more closings occured on Tuesday around the…

What's More Dangerous: The Effects of Smoking or a Smoking Ban?

Some local business owners are not pleased with the effects of the city's smoking ban.

As I pulled up to the front of The Pub on a Friday night, I could almost hear the crickets chirping; there were maybe six or seven cars in the parking lot and not a soul outside in the chilly weather. The establishment used to have a big sign out front stating 'Full Smoking Bar', but not anymore; and now John Bagwell has forfeited his draw. "I've lost well over half my business," the owner says. "We've been here for seven years and we're struggling now."  The Lake Saint Louis smoking ban went into effect Oct. 1, 2010 and was the first ban to be passed in St. Charles County. Bagwell's sentiment is echoed by other establishments around the area, though not all of them. "The smoking ban has not taken any effect on our business in a negative…

By the way, what is that 'Flag as inappropriate' link in the upper rt. corner of Betty's article about. I'm new to Patch. Without any explanationl, it looks like what we are both saying is obviously true! If you don't like what the article says, its inappropriate? What is the point of freedom of expression, the press etc.? Why not just put a vote to end the 'Bill of Rights' as that is what that …   more ›
