James Weber, a Project Lead the Way instructor, was recognized for his accomplishments in teaching students about math and science and preparing them for tomorrow's technologies.
James Weber, a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) instructor at Timberland High School has earned him recognition as an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Foundation 2013 Educator Achievement Award Winner. “I am both honored and humbled to receive this award,” Weber said. “When I see all the extra work that teachers at Timberland High School do beyond the scope of their job, it is difficult to consider that I should be the one who gets recognized.” Weber mentors students and encourages them to pursue an area of study in STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. “Teaching is an important part of my life, and teaching aerospace engineering has been an inspiration. Partners for Progress' annual STEM awards pick out some of the best students in science, technology, engineering and math in St. Charles County, including three Wentzville students.
Seventeen St. Charles County students were recognized for their achievements during Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) recognition breakfast Friday at the Old Hickory Golf Club in St. Peters. The event is sponsored by Partners for Progress of Greater St. Charles. Students recognized at the event were: Holt High School junior Savannah Est and Bauer also were recognized for placing in the Missouri’s Tri-County Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at St. Charles Community College on Feb. 25. Est took first place, and will travel to international science fairs in Pittsburgh and Houston with her project, “Optimization of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells." Bauer placed third at the event. Holt and Timberland have become the first high schools in St. Charles County to receive national certification for the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) program. PLTW offers a hands-on curriculum in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) that allows students to apply what they are learning in math and science class to real life engineering and technology projects. PLTW has been offered in the Wentzville School District since 2007. The national certification recognizes schools that have successfully demonstrated a commitment to the national standards of the Pathway To Engineering program, and to provide an opportunity for students to apply for college credit at universities affiliated with PLTW. Holt students win first place in contest.
Whiz Kids: STEM award winners — Drew Berry of Lake Saint Louis and Ryan Biggs and Lindsay Ralls from Wentzville Nominated By: Wentzville R-IV School District Accomplishment: Three Holt seniors won first place for their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) video production in a contest sponsored by Partners for Progress of St. Charles County and Lindenwood University. The three teamed up to create the video which focuses on careers at SSM St. Joseph West Hospital in Lake Saint Louis. This is the second award the trio received for their project. Holt junior wins UMSL science award.
Bauer is the daughter of Rachelle and John Bauer of Wentzville. Last month, she received the Society for InVitro Biology Award for her project “The Effect of BPA Exposure on Sex Determination of O. Latipes” at the Missouri Tri-County Regional Science and Engineering Fair. She was also invited to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles May 7-14 as a “promising underclassman” in order to observe projects in preparation for next year’s competition. Bauer has been enrolled in the Wentzville School District’s Horizons (gifted and talented) program since she was in first grade “which helped develop her interest in research,” said her mother Rachelle. STEM breakfast speakers emphasize importance of science, technology, engineering, math studies.
A robot affectionately called “Chum Chucker” spit out soccer balls, surrounded by the orange-shirted River City Robots team that created it. Nearby, younger students in the First Lego League knelt on the floor worked remotes controlling smaller robots that cruised the floor at Old Hickory Golf Course Country Club in St. Peters. “We get an assignment and then we have six weeks to build it,” said Elizabeth Stearns, a senior and a home-schooled student from St. Charles who participates in the robotics program.
