The storm that brought damaging winds and hail to the Wentzville/Lake Saint Louis area had some unexpected consequences.
Saturday's storm damaged trees, signs and utility poles. The accompanying hail broke siding and screens and shattered windshields. But the storms also caused a one-car accident on Interstate 70. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a 2011 Chevy Equinox driven by Patricia C. Kilroy-Govero, 56, of Wentzville, was traveling westbound on Interstate 70 east of Highway 61 at 5:30 p.m. The severe weather conditions caused the car's airbags to deploy. The report did not specify if it was the hail or another aspect of the weather that caused the deployment. Kilroy-Govero received minor injuries and was taken to SSM St. Joseph West Hospital in Lake Saint Louis. Patch talked to Dan Clancy of Dan's Foreign Auto Repair in Wentzville about …

Huge jagged hailstones fell for a short time in the day's second round of storms.
UPDATE: High winds in the day's second round of storms left a mark on Wentzville and Lake Saint Louis. Both cities experienced tree damage. On East Pearce Boulevard, wind broke a telephone pole at its base, leaving it tilted to one side and dropping lines dangerously near the streets. Officers were routing traffic around the lines until the phone company could arrive. Residents have been sharing their stories on the Wentzville Facebook page. One resident reported that "some of the hail off of Peine road was just shy of softball sized hail. We, along with many of our neighbors have siding, roof, and car damage." Patch measured one hailstone at three inches in diameter. The sound of the hailstones on a metal barn roof sounded "like someone …

Local meteorologist from National Weather Service offers tips in the event of a tornado warning.
The best advice in preparing for severe weather is to plan ahead, according to Ben Miller, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s (NWS) St. Louis Office. “Know what you are going to do before it happens,” Miller said. “For families, figure out where you usually are and where you’re going to go in the event of severe weather.” For detailed information from the NWS on severe weather preparedness and setting up plans for your family, click here. Also important, Miller said, is knowing the difference between a tornado watch and a warning. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the development of a tornado, he said. Watches are usually issued several hours in advance of the development of a tornado. A tornado warning …

St. Louis cities such as Creve Coeur and Hazelwood have offered to help cities affected by the Good Friday storms.
The St. Louis County Municipal League has been coordinating cleanup efforts with the county by contacting and making visits to cities hit this weekend by a devastating tornado, its executive director said Tuesday. But while work is underway in the areas hardest hit, the Municipal League isn't recruiting additional help until applications for funding through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are approved, executive director Tim Fischesser said. "Everybody likes to go slow, until FEMA kind of opens the door," executive director Tim Fischesser said. He said St. Louis County is pursuing a FEMA-approved vendor that would help multiple cities by collecting debris. But the need to go through a bidding process means that vendor's work…
