St. Charles County Council Backs Naming Bridge for Stan Musial

Council passed a resolution in support of the naming on Monday.

The St. Charles County Council on Monday expressed support for naming the new Mississippi River Bridge in honor of Cardinals legend Stan Musial, who died last week. The council passed a resolution Monday night in support of a push by Missouri and Illinois senators to name the new Mississippi River Bridge in honor of the baseball great. “Stan Musial brought honor to himself, his family and the entire Cardinal nation by his generosity, humility and dignity, making innumerable visits to children in the hospital and reaching out to children and fans in ways too numerous to mention,” the resolution reads, in part. Council president Terry Hollander said he felt that everyone revisited their childhood while remembering Musial's accomplishments. "…

St. Charles County Won't Vote on Smoking Ban Proposal

According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch article, Circuit Judge Ted House threw out the ballot measure.

St. Charles County voters won't have the chance to vote on a smoking ban in November after Circuit Judge Ted House decided Tuesday to pull the measure off the ballot.  Anti-smoking advocate Don Young filed suit against St. Charles County Elections Director Rich Chrismer after Chrismer decided to pull the measure from the ballot.  House sided with Chrismer, who argued that the wording in the ballot language was inconsistent, according to an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.  "House said the council did not follow proper procedure to get it on the ballot."  Read the full Post-Dispatch story here.

St. Charles County Council Keeps Original Ballot Wording for Smoking Ban

Councilman Joe Cronin called a second version with exceptions "weak and watered down."

(The following press release was issued by the St. Charles County Council.) The St. Charles County Council, at a special meeting Saturday morning, decided to stand by its original bill calling for a charter amendment in the form of a ballot proposition concerning a countywide ban on smoking in enclosed public places. The Council considered a new bill that would have changed the ballot language to merge the smoking ban with three exceptions: places requiring patrons and employees to be age at least 21 years of age, private clubs, and 20 percent of hotel rooms. Councilman Joe Cronin, the sponsor of both the original and second bill, said the Council did a lot of “soul-searching” and came to the conclusion that passing “something that was …

Council Absences: Voters Will Decide How Many Are Too Many

The St. Charles County Council approved putting a number of charter amendments on the November ballot.

St. Charles County voters will be asked to decide whether a council member should be removed from the council after accruing 12 consecutive unexcused absences. Council meetings are typically held twice a month. That issue will be one of several charter amendments voters will consider Nov. 6. The others include a countywide smoking ban and exemptions to that ban, and whether to create a county police agency to handle the law enforcement duties which would be led by an appointed police chief.  Read more about the proposed smoking ban here and the proposed police department here. The missed meetings issue arose after St. Charles County Councilman Paul Wynn began working as an independent contractor in Afghanistan in October 2011. Wynn was …

Should County Sheriff's Department Change to a Police Department?

St. Charles County approved a bill to ask voters whether the county Sheriff's Department should switch to a Police Department with an appointed police chief.

St. Charles County could have both an elected sheriff and an appointed chief of police in the future.  The St. Charles County Council voted Monday to put the issue on the November ballot and let voters decide whether to establish a county police department which would be responsible for law enforcement duties in the county.  Under the proposal, the St. Charles County Sheriff's Department would remain in charge of court services, prisoner transport, process serving.  Council members John White, Terry Hollander, Joe Cronin and Nancy voted in favor of putting the matter before the voters. Council members Joe Brazil and Jerry Daugherty voted against the bill. County Executive Steve Ehlmann said he would sign the bill putting it before voters…

This is very simple, the proposal is to reverse the long standing tradition of electing a powerful position. The position would lose accountability and could easily fall into good ole boy corruption practices with no need for public approval as the appointments are made by, no one know because it isn't specified anywhere. The 100,000 dollar estimate is ridiculous as that won't purchase a single …   more ›

Council Members Split on a Countywide Smoking Ban Vote

Council members offered thoughts on a proposed ban introduced by Councilman Joe Cronin that would put the matter before voters Nov. 6.

St. Charles County Council members weighed in on Councilman Joe Cronin's third attempt at getting a countywide smoking ban placed on the Nov. 6 ballot. Cronin's proposed ban includes exemptions for Ameristar Casino, private residences, private clubs with no employees and retail tobacco stores. Read more about his proposal here. Council member Nancy Matheny, District 3, said the council will spend the next two weeks discussing whether they can come to an agreement on what types of exemptions should be included in the bill. "We have six members of the County Council that are present and Paul Wynn who is present by phone," she said. "Everyone is in a different place on this continuum... Our goal will be to find out if we can get four (votes) …

If your right to smoke keeps me from my rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, then you have gone too far and the government needs to step in. Go ahead an smoke. Just do it in the privacy of your own home where you aren't making everyone else around you sick to their stomachs.   more ›

County Opts to Continue Tow Truck Driver Background Checks

Tow truck company owners upset at law that denies tow licenses to drivers convicted of felonies.

The St. Charles County Sheriff’s Department will begin issuing licenses and performing background checks on tow truck drivers.  A measure approved by the St. Charles County Council March 26 allows the county to continue checking backgrounds of tow truck drivers. Previously, the county Registrar’s office issued the license and did the background checks. However, Roger Morgan, owner of Assured Towing in Wentzville, successfully sued St. Charles County by asserting that only law enforcement officials could perform background checks. After the March 26 meeting, Morgan argued that the judge in his case ruled the county could not use a closed court record to deny his license. A judgment in the case reads: “St. Charles County and (Registrar …

I think that by doing the back ground check on any one that deals with peoples personal info is a good thing not a bad thing. That tells me the county has my back. It looks like only the tow companies that are complaining are maybe the ones with problems and have a questional back ground.   more ›

Pellerito Declines Run for County Council Seat

Races shape up for St. Charles County Council race as filings closed Monday for the August primary.

Filings closed Monday for the St. Charles County Council elections with opposed races in each district. In District 2, Republican incumbent Joe Brazil will run in the primary against Republican Bob Stephens, who owns Compare Automotive Muffler on Swantnerville Drive in Wentzville. Lake Saint Louis alderman John Pellerito, who had expressed interest in challenging Brazil, decided not to run. "Basically, I decided not to run because my heart is really in Lake Saint Louis," Pellerito told Patch. Pellerito is currently running to retain his seat on the Lake Saint Louis Board of Aldermen. "I would have to campaign for both seats and I just don't have the time to do that." "I do believe that there needs (to be) change on the council since …

"Pellerito said that council members were afraid to make a quality decision because of pressure applied by a minority of business owners who would actually benefit from a smoking ban." So, am I assuming correctly that Pellerito feels that decisions are "quality" only if they agree with him? Aside from that, I'm wondering about the second half of the statement: Is he saying that the business …   more ›
