Washington Nationals starting pitcher Ross Detwiler, a Wentzville Holt graduate, will face off against Kyle Loshe and the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 4 of the National League Division Series. Detwiler still makes his offseason home in Wentzville.
Ross Detwiler, a 2004 graduate of Wentzville Holt High School, grew up cheering on the Cardinals. Tonight, he'll be pitching for the Washington Nationals in NLDS Game 4. The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Detwiler faces a huge challenge: When he climbs the mound at Nationals Park for Game 4 of the National League Division Series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday, he could be staring down elimination or a series clincher. He will be facing a team that only two weeks ago bashed him around for seven runs, three earned, in only 2 1/3 innings. After Wednesday's 8-0 win by the Cardinals, Detwiler and the Nats need a win or the 2012 season will be over. As a Holt senior, Detwiler helped his team earn a district title—the team'…

Major League Baseball's non-waiver trade deadline is July 31.
For St. Louis Cardinal executives and the team's die-hard fans, this time of year is a familiar exercise. Get past the All-Star break, take stock of where you are in the standings, and decide if you have what it takes to make a run in the postseason. One year ago on July 27, the Cardinals wheeled and dealed their way to transactions that sent Colby Rasmus to Toronto, and brought pitchers Edwin Jackson, Octavio Dotel and Marc Rzepczynski back to St. Louis, among others. Heading into today's game against the Chicago Cubs, the Cardinals are 53-46, just a few games back of the second Wild Card playoff spot. With the July 31 deadline looming to trade players without having to clear waivers--meaning making traded players available to other teams…

The third baseman sent the St. Louis Cardinals to Game 7 of the World Series with his clutch performance, but he hasn't secured a spot on the National League's All-Star Game roster yet. Fans can still vote him in.
Why doesn’t the World Series MVP have a spot on the All-Star team yet? David Freese rescued the St. Louis Cardinals when they were one strike away from losing the World Series twice, and started this season with 13 home runs. Aside from baseball, he created his own baseball camp, suffered through an obnoxious interview at Six Flags St. Louis and made this 7-year old’s dream come true. Does that sound like an All-Star to you? Vote here or text N2 to 89269 to cast your ballot for Freese, who is competing against Bryce Harper (Washington Nationals), Michael Bourn (Atlanta Braves) and Aaron Hill (Arizona Diamondbacks). Freese was in the running against favorite Atlanta Braves' Chipper Jones, when Major League Baseball announced Jones would …

We'll give away a Patch cap and T-shirt to three people drawn at random from among the photos you submit.
Is there a bigger holiday in St. Louis than Opening Day? The perfectly green grass. The bright white uniforms. The possibilities... If there's a bigger day to celebrate, we don't know what it is. So we're hoping Patch readers will share their excitement about the home opener between the Cards and the Cubs on Friday by uploading their favorite photo from the afternoon. We've stirred the pot a little with a few photos from previous openers from Associate Regional Editor Brian Feldt. We hope you'll add a few more to the gallery. Just click the button that says "upload photos and videos" and follow the instructions. We'll send a Patch T-shirt and ballcap to three of you at random from among those who share a photo before the first pitch of …

With the St. Louis Cardinals' home opener just days away, and with the rival Cubbies coming to town, now's the time for some trash talk — in two words.
You've heard the expression before, right? "I've got two words to say about that!" Well, this is the Patch version, coming ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals' home opener on Friday in which the Redbirds face off against the Chicago Cubs. Starting pitchers are expected to be Jeff Samardzija for the Cubs vs. Adam Wainwright for the Cards. After the Cardinals ruined the home opener for the Miami Marlins with a 4-1 victory in the team's new ballpark, and again ruined the home opener for the Milwaukee Brewers with an 11-5 victory, we have our heart set on a win for the Cards' opener at 2:15 p.m. Friday. The Cardinals get their first home game as they launch the season after their 11th World Series victory last year. The nationally syndicated "…

The St. Louis Cardinals look to begin their title-defense today when they kickoff the regular season against the Miami Marlins.
Today's Major League Baseball's official Opening Day, considered by thousands of St. Louisans as an unofficial holiday. And while the St. Louis Cardinals' home opener is really where it's at, that's not stopping us from getting into the baseball mood! There's no shortage of story lines for the 2012 Cardinals as they look to defend last season's World Series Championship when the season kicks off today against the Miami Marlins. Related: Update your Facebook Timeline cover photo with an image that captures your loyalty for the Redbirds. The team is missing perhaps three of its biggest names of the past decade in manager Tony La Russa, pitching coach Dave Duncan—both of whom retired—and, of course, Albert Pujols, who signed with the Los …

Stop your whining, they'll come back and win it tomorrow. There was a generous strike zone for both teams, and we lost when Lynn left one in the middle of the strike zone after an epic at-bat. You tip your hat and move on. I guarantee you that's what happening in the Cards' clubhouse.   more ›
