Wentzville Opens Arms to Run for the Wall Motorcyclists Making Trek to Nation's Capitol

Wentzville, Missouri, site of the first Vietnam Veterans Memorials, host over 550 motorcyclists May 21 and 22 at the Run For The Wall event culminating in Washington, D.C. Friday evening.

Hundreds of people lined Highway Z Monday afternoon welcoming approximately 550 motorcyclists to Wentzville on the central route’s sixth leg of the Run For The Wall journey to Washington, DC. Wentzville and O’Fallon fire departments hoisted the American Flag on ladder trucks across the highway, creating a gateway to the event. Cyclists arrived by police escort. A brief ceremony took place at the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial at the VFW post. Speakers included Chief of Police Lisa Harrison, Mayor Nick Guccione, VFW state commander and others. Run For The Wall was conceived in 1989 by two Vietnam Vets, “Gunny” Gregory and Bill Evans, who traveled the United States raising awareness for the unaccounted veteran, whether they be missing in action …

Lake Saint Louis' Champion for Veteran Recognition Looks to the Future

Ralph Barrale worked for years to make Veterans Memorial Parkway and Lake Saint Louis' Veterans Memorial Park a reality.

The Huffington Post has chosen Ralph Barrale of Lake Saint Louis, MO as its "Greatest Person of the Day"—an honor recognizing people who confront issues in their community with creativity and passion.)   Ralph Barrale, 88, served under Gen. George Patton in the 3rd Army in World War II, landing at Utah Beach on D-Day. He was at the Battle of the Bulge and at the Remagen Bridge. "My outfit was front-line military police, combat military. We directed traffic and took in prisoners right behind the infantry," Barrale said. Barrale has three big scrapbooks filled with commendations and other memorabilia from his years of service, and the walls of the Barrale rec room are covered with framed pictures and awards. Those years of service to his …

St. Charles County Council Filters Out Smoking Ban

The county council may revisit the issue to come up with a compromise plan.

Veterans' organization members, bar owners and Ameristar Casino employees broke into applause after the St. Charles County Council voted down a proposal to put a countywide smoking ban on the November 2012 ballot. A tied 3-3 vote doomed the proposal. Before the vote, Kevin Nash, who lives near O’Fallon, said people were confusing the issue. Nash pointed out the proposal wasn’t to create a smoking ban, but to allow St. Charles County residents to vote on the issue. “The ordinance is about whether the citizens of St. Charles County will have the opportunity to say, ‘This is what I want,’ and to express that through their vote,” Nash said. Larry Williams, commander of American Veterans Post 106 in St. Peters, referred to a contingent of …

'Hellaballoo' is Back: Countywide Smoking Ban Proposal to be Reintroduced

Two ordinances would allow voters to vote separately on banning smoking in public places and allowing an exemption for casinos.

St. Charles County Councilman Joe Cronin (R-1st District) will introduce two bills on a countywide smoking ban. One would place a countywide smoking ban on the ballot. If passed by voters, it would ban smoking in all public places with a few exemptions. The ordinances will be introduced at the county council meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the St. Charles County Executive Building. “It’s a simple issue really,” said Cronin. “All it does is let the voters decide whether or not people have to step outside to smoke in a bar or restaurant.” The second bill would allow voters to choose if they want to exempt casinos from the smoking ban. Ameristar Casino is the only casino in St. Charles County, thus the only one affected. Last spring, Cronin …

Mr. Cronin, I don't appreciate anyone telling me what I can or can't do on my own property, with my own body. Yes, I realize smoking is bad for me, so is the cell phone tower that was put up across the road against my will that you voted for. What are you going to do next, tell the people how they must dress in public? I personally would like a ban on foul language everywhere, maybe you could …   more ›

Local Heroes Need Home for VFW Post

Members of Post 10350 fear for their post's future unless they can find a permanent location.

One was shot down on his 23rd mission and held in German prison camps for over a year. He was 20 years old. Another liberated prisoners from the Dachau concentration camp, where more than 32,000 people, mostly Jews, suffered sickness, starvation, torture and execution. Still another was among the Allied troops who landed along a 50-mile stretch of the French coastline on the beaches of Normany. It was June 6, 1941: D-Day. These American heroes and some 60 others make up the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10350 in Lake Saint Louis. They're looking for a permanent home. Right now members meet at Lake Saint Louis City Hall or the Lake St. Louis Community Association. The national VFW website lists 27 posts within about 30 miles of Lake …
