Is it too much for the city to run 19 special events, including Wabash Days, Holiday Night Lights, Eggstravaganza, Halloween Happenings, parades, movies and concerts in the parks?

She suggested that such a group could organize, establish committees and recruit volunteers, rather than have the city's parks department providing all the work force and labor. City staff asked that the board consider not just the profit and loss numbers, but the economic impact to the city and what these events provide to residents.
At Wednesday night's work session, the Wentzville Board of Aldermen will discuss the future of the city's special events, including Wabash Days, Holiday Night Lights and the 4th of July celebration. When Wabash Days was first established, the intent was to turn it over to a local organization. However, no organization came forward and this year's event will be the mark the tenth anniversary of Wabash Days. "By their very nature, special events hosted by a City Municipality have less ability to be profitable than other hosting entities. This is partially due to the cost in staffing an event with public/local government employees rather than utilization of organizations who volunteer hours to work the event(s)," city documents reported. …

Wabash Days festivities run from Friday, Aug. 24 to Sun., Aug. 26.
Wabash Days, brought to you by the Wentzville Parks Department along with the Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Business Association, the Historical Society and the Wentzville Community Club, will feature live entertainment, craft booths, a midway, parade and car show, among many other fun family activities. Jessica Karll, 3rd grade teacher at Discovery Ridge, will lead the Aug. 25 parade.

Discovery Ridge Elementary 3rd grade teacher Jessica Karll has been chosen to serve as the Honorary Grand Marshal of the Wabash Days Community Club Parade. Mrs. Karll was selected as the Wentzville School District “Teacher of the Year” for the 2011-12 school year. She is in her fifth year with the Wentzville School District and has taught at Discovery Ridge since it opened in 2010. Mrs. Karll serves on the District communication arts committee and her class has been selected as a model classroom for District professional development. She serves as the building Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) chair, and in 2011 her students and third-grade team had MAP scores …

A look at Saturday's events, including the annual Wabash Days Parade, carnival rides and a performance by the West County Spinners.
Wentzville residents lined Main Street on Saturday to catch the Wabash Days parade. The Wentzville Fire Protection District, the Moolah Shriners, Therapeutic Horsemanship and Unkorked Wine Garden were just some of the participants in the parade. Aldermen Leon Tow and Nick Guccione also made floats for their candidacy for mayor in the upcoming election. Allen Street was blocked off for carnival rides, games, food vendors and local craftsmen. The West County Spinners also performed a square dance on Allen Street. The Spinners hold square dancing classes all over the St. Louis area.

Raised funds for Friends of the Wentzville parks.
The Friends of the Wentzville Parks held the second Pound the Pavement 5K/10K race Saturday in conjunction with Wabash Days. Greg Younger, president of the organization, said there were approximately 225 runners this year. "That's about twice what we had last year and we hope to double that number for next year," he said. According to KMOV $83,000 is budgeted in losses. I want to applaud the board of aldermen for approving the budget that shows $83,000 in losses for entertainment. With the current number of residents in Wentzville that calculates to less than $3 per resident...yes that is right, less than $3 per resident. Aren't we worth $3.
