Board Votes Against Mayor's Choice for Ward 3 Seat

The Wentzville Board of Aldermen failed to approve Michael Hays to fill the Ward 3 seat.

At a special meeting on Wednesday just before the regular 7 p.m. board of aldermen meeting, the board voted 3-2  against Michael Hays, Mayor Nick Guccuione's choice to fill the seat he vacated when he was elected mayor in April. Aldermen Chris Gard and Forrest Gossett voted to approve the appointment; Aldermen Rick Stokes, Sonya Shryock and Cheryl Kross voted against the appointment. Michael Hayes, who has been a Wentzville resident since 1989, had been the mayor's original choice for the seat since Guccione's election to mayor in April. The board asked for a procedure that would allow residents to apply for any vacant positions, although the power of appointment is the mayor's, and he is not required to choose from that pool of applicants…

With Ward 3 Seat Still Vacant, Board Will Vote on Procedure for Applications

Wentzville's new procedure for vacancies would set up a 10-day application period.

With the Ward 3 seat still vacant, the Wentzville Board of Aldermen will give a second reading and final vote for an ordinance that will establish a procedure for creating a pool of applicants for vacancies at tonight's regular meeting. The Ward 3 seat was left vacant by the election of Nick Guccione as mayor. The mayor has stated repeatedly that he feels it is his responsibility to appoint an alderman for the vacant seat without input from the board, although he recognizes that the board must vote to accept the appointment. Ward 1 Alderman Forrest Gosset suggested that city staff create a process to inform residents that vacancies exist and establish an application period. The bill says that The notice of vacancy shall state that the City…

The board doesn't like it? Tough cookies, it's not their choice. Whining about the law doesn't negate it. Just makes them look greedy for more power. Run for Mayor yourself.   more ›

Wentzville Mayor, Aldermen Disagree on Ward 3 Seat Filling

'This is the mayor’s appointment, not the board’s appointment,' says Mayor Nick Guccione.

The Wentzville Board of Aldermen held a special session Wednesday night, prior to their regular meeting, to discuss the process by which the board would fill the Ward 3 seat left vacant after former Ward 3 member Nick Guccione was elected mayor last April. A bill on the agenda for that night would allow the board to set up an application process to create a pool of potential candidates so the seat could be open to the public. Mayor Nick Guccione, however, said that as mayor he had the authority to make the appointment he desired. Guccione’s appointee is Mike Hays, who has served in the Wentzville planning and zoning board for 16 years. Ward 1 Alderman Forrest Gossett repeatedly told the mayor the issue was not who he chose, but the …

So if this is not a dictatorship (Rick Stokes words, not mine), why are the Aldermen believing they should have the last word? I bet when it comes time for the Aldermen to choose a City Administrator they will not be asking the Mayor how he feels about their selection. Strangely enough, a City Administrator job paying into the 6-digit amount cannot attrack anyone to Wentzville. That in itself …   more ›

Special Meeting Called to Fill Empty Ward 3 Seat

One of the Ward 3 seats has been vacant since the election of Nick Guccione as mayor.

The Wentzville Board of Aldermen will hold a special meeting at 5:45 p.m. on Wed., May 23 to appoint a Ward 3 alderman. The Ward 3 seat was left vacant after Nick Guccione was elected Mayor and sworn in on April 25. At that meeting, Guccione mentioned the need to fill the empty seat, and board members expressed their desire to create an application process to create a pool of potential candidates. Guccione has repeatedly stated that if the board fails to approve his appointment he will not make another. If that happens, the seat could remain empty until the April 2013 regular election. Calling a special election just to fill the seat would be an unnecessary expense on taxpayers, Guccione said. The May 23 special meeting is being held just …
