Wentzville Firefighters Shovel Driveways as Part of Community Outreach Program

This was the first time the firefighters have offered the snow-shoveling service, and they hope it will grow.

On Friday, Jim Schram was just one of several residents that got some help from Wentzville firefighters who donate their time off to serve their community. After four to six inches of snow and sleet fell on the community Thursday, firefighters took the streets Friday equipped with snow shovels and snow blowers as part of the Wentzville Fire District's Community Outreach program. Schram's sister had seen a post about the firefighters' snow-shoveling service posted on the Community Outreach Facebook Page and tagged him, suggesting that he email the firefighters and ask for help. The firefighters made the offer of help several times via Facebook, asking anyone who needed help to contact them by email. Those asking for help received a …

Girl Scouts, Firefighters Celebrate National Cookie Day

Two local troops visited firefighters at Wentzville Fire Station #4 in O'Fallon.

Girl Scouts around the area celebrated National Cookie Day on February 8 by sharing cookies and milk with firefighters. Wentzville Fire Station #4 on Orf Road in O'Fallon hosted two groups of scouts on Friday night. Brownie Troop #49, under the leadership of Sarah Longwell, visited the station at 5 p.m. They were joined by Daisy Troop #4902, under the leadership of Annie Tobin-Bartlow, at 5:30 p.m. The Brownie troop shared their experiences as Brownie scouts with the younger Daisies, who will be bridging to Brownies this spring. The event took an unusual turn when the fire station received a call and the firefighters had to dash to their trucks. The girls, parents and troop leaders ran to the windows to see the trucks pulling out of the …

Tax Increase, Bond Issue May Be in the Works for Wentzville Fire District

The district would have to decide before May 28 in order to place the issues on the August ballot.

The Wentzville Fire District may be asking for a tax increase in August, the Suburban Journals reported last week. The fire district, which covers 88 square miles of Wentzville, Foristell, Flint Hill and Josephville as well as part of Lake Saint Louis and unincorporated St. Charles County, has until May 28 to decide whether to put the increase on the August ballot. According to the minutes of the fire district's Jan. 3 work session, Chief Randy Bornhop told the board and staff that the district "is at a point where to move forward, the district must discuss alternative funding." No capital improvements are planned for 2013, but rapid growth in the Wentzville area means more calls to the fire department. The district answered 4,004 calls in…

Flaming Squirrel Starts Brush Fire in Wentzville

The fire was contained to an approximately 50 ft. by 50 ft. area.

Wentzville's extended drought and the upcoming holiday has a lot of people worried about the possibility of fires from errant sparks. But a brush fire in a Wentzville subdivision Sunday night was not caused by fireworks. It was caused by a squirrel. Wentzville Fire Captain John LeDoux told Patch that the fire on Lost Canyon Drive in the Stone Ridge Canyon subdivision was the result of a squirrel shorting out a fuse on a power line. The squirrel caught fire and fell to the ground, starting a brush fire. The fire was reported at 8:55 p.m., and fire crews were able to extinguish it quickly. "We were relatively lucky," said LeDoux. "The fire had to burn downhill, which fire doesn't like to do." The squirrel, which was found at the base of the …
