Major Shakeup of Wentzville Fire Protection District Puts Top Chiefs on Leave

Chief Randy Bornhop and Assistant Chief Robb Watkins were both placed on paid administrative leave.

A special meeting of the Board of Directors of the Wentzville Fire Protection District on Monday led to a major change in the administration, according to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch  Chief Randy Bornhop and Assistant Chief Robb Watkins were both placed on paid administrative leave, and Fire Marshall Joseph F. Heitkamp was terminated—though, acting Chief Mike Scott would not confirm if he had been let go.  Bornhop has been with the district since he began as a volunteer in 1986. When the city hired its first paid firefighters in 1991, Bornhop was one of the original six. In Fight for Wentzville Fire Board Seat, Mainieri Gains $38K from Firefighters

Documents show that Robert J. Mainieri, Jr's campaign committee has outraised opponent Jim Peanick, Jr's by nearly $40,000.

In the race to become a director on Wentzville Fire Protection District's board, one candidate clearly has the support of firefighters from Wentzville and elsewhere.  That's according to campaign finance reports filed with St. Charles County Election Authority and Missouri Ethics Commission. Documents show that Robert J. Mainieri, Jr's campaign committee has outraised opponent Jim Peanick, Jr's by nearly $40,000. Both are vying for a vacant seat on the board. Mainieri's committee is being funded primarily by donations from firefighters in the district, which covers all or parts of Lake Saint Louis, O'Fallon and Wentzville, among other areas in west St. Charles County. Meth Lab Explodes, Severely Burns Woman, Ignites Barn

Two men were charged with making meth and first-degree arson for the fire.

A meth lab exploded Monday, severely burning a woman and setting fire to a barn in the 2400 block of Branch Lane in St. Charles County southwest of Wentzville. Two men face arson and drug charges in the incident. Dale A. Lenze, 53, the landowner, and Kyle W. Green, 24, each was charged Tuesday with first-degree arson and manufacturing methamphetamine. Lenze also was charged with possessing meth. Lenze told St. Charles County Drug Task Force detectives that Green told him a one-pot meth lab “went bad” during the meth-making process and exploded at about 12:30 p.m. Monday, severely burning a woman’s legs and feet. Lenze told detectives he saw the fire in the upper portion of the barn and heard the woman “screaming in agonizing pain.” Green …

Wentzville Fire Protection Launches New Website

New site connects residents with the organization and its services.

The Wentzville Fire Protection District has launched a new and improved user-friendly website. The new site is designed to provide an easy, accessible, and customer-friendly resource that reflects what the Fire District does and the many services it provides.  The site features each division of the Fire District, which includes fire rescue, fire administration and fire rescue support, and describes the areas of operation these divisions oversee. It also features Fire District and program information, a memorial page of fallen firefighters, and information about the honor guard. “We’re very excited about the new and improved website,” said Assistant Fire Chief Robb Watkins. “Our website is just one of the ways we intend to better connect …

Wentzville Firefighters, Emergency Workers Honored for Response

The Lake Saint Louis City Council will honor emergency workers for their role in responding to an apartment fire Feb. 29.

The Lake Saint Louis City Council plans to present firefighters and other first responders from the Wentzville and Lake Saint Louis fire protection districts with a resolution at its 7 p.m. meeting Monday. The resolution will honor the firefighters, paramedics and others for their “timely, courageous and dedicated response” to a fire at Camden Cedar Lake Apartments Feb. 29 The fire destroyed 16 units in the apartment complex in Lake Saint Louis, a fire made worse by strong winds. No one was injured, and firefighters rescued two dogs and a cat from the apartments.

Wentzville Firefighters Extricate Child from Gun Safe

The child became stuck in a safe at Lowe's.

Wentzville firefighters were dispatched Saturday evening to a report of a child locked in a safe at the Lowe’s store at 1889 Wentzville Parkway.  Upon arrival, the firefighters were shown to a tall gun safe with the child inside and the door locked. The crews were able to make contact with the 2-year-old boy trapped inside.  The firefighters used an electric drill to drill a hole into the top of the safe to allow an oxygen tube to be inserted. This tube supplied oxygen to the child.   While this operation was happening, store staff attempted to unlock the safe with a key and combination. This was unsuccessful and the firefighters started using pry bars and hydraulic rescue tools to open the safe.  During the extrication operation the crews…

Wentzville Fire District Holding MoCHIP Event Saturday

Child identification program will be held at fire station 1.

On Saturday the Wentzville Fire Protection District will be co-sponsoring a Missouri Child Identification Program (MoCHIP) event with the local Wentzville Masonic Lodge 46.  The event will be held at Station 1 of the Wentzville Fire Protection District from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.  MoCHIP has been deemed “one of the most comprehensive child recovery and identification programs in the nation,” by The National Center for Exploited and Missing Children.  This is a FREE Child ID program.  Since its inception in August 2005, the MoCHIP program has seen and identified over 127,000 children making it one of the most successful and thorough of the “CHIP” programs. Lightning Strike Causes Basement Fire

Wentzville Fire Protection District responded to the blaze.

After the storms on Sunday moved east, Wentzville firefighters responded to a report of a lightning strike to a residence in the 200 block of East Bless Us Drive in Flint Hill.  The emergency call came out at 9:39 p.m.  The first fire units arrived on the scene to find a moderate fire in the basement with heavy smoke throughout the house.  The occupants of the home were able to evacuate to safety.  Fire crews made an aggressive fire attack to the basement. The fire was brought under control within 45 minutes. Due to the rural location of the residence, three alarms were dispatched to the scene to get the firefighters and water tankers needed.
