If the shelves at Heartland Guns and Ammo in Wentzville are any indication, area gun owners and shooting enthusiasts are concerned about the availability of guns and supplies—or maybe they're just expressing their support of their second-amendment rights. Patch stopped by the gun shop last week to ask about business in light of President Obama's gun control plans. A conservative group is hoping that tens of thousands turn out to show their support for gun ownership with their pocketbooks and picket signs the day before President Barack Obama is sworn in for a second term. The group, a coalition brought together for the event, declared Jan. 19 "Gun Appreciation Day." The hope is that Americans nationwide will show their support for gun ownership by turning out en masse at gun stores, ranges and shows from coast to coast. “The Obama administration has shown that it is more than willing to trample the Constitution to impose its dictates upon the American people,” said Gun Appreciation Day chairman Larry Ward in a press release. The question reemerges after every mass shooting in America: are more stringent gun control laws necessary to prevent future shootings? It's a question that was posed after the shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, CO in July. There's no way to avoid it. The gun control debate re-emerges with every shooting like the one on Friday morning in Aurora, CO: A man kills 12 and wounds more than 50 in a movie theater at a premiere of the latest Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises." On one end of the gun debate, Missouri Rep. John McCaherty (R-90th District), of High Ridge, is set to raffle off the civilian version of the military M16 rifle at a fundraising dinner Aug. 27. The rifle is a legally owned AR15 rifle that was given to him by the NRA.
