Chuck Gatschenberger, Missouri House of Representatives Dist. 108, gives his opinion on current issues.
(Rep. Chuck Gatschenberger, R-Lake Saint Louis, has released his Capitol Report for Feb. 22. The opinions expressed in the column are those of Rep. Gatschenberger and do not reflect the views of the Wentzville Patch. —Ed.) I’ve received a multitude of emails, calls, and letters the past week from constituents who are greatly concerned about a bill filed by Rep. Rory Ellinger (D-86). Rep. Ellinger, along with three other St. Louis representatives, filed House Bill 545. I respect Rep. Ellinger, and I know he believes he is doing the right thing by introducing this bill. But I cannot agree. HB 545 is a direct attack on the second amendment that would make many law-abiding gun owners felons. The bill seeks to ban the possession, sale, …

Ted Brand of Heartland Guns and Ammo is eager for construction of the shop's new gun range.
If the shelves at Heartland Guns and Ammo in Wentzville are any indication, area gun owners and shooting enthusiasts are concerned about the availability of guns and supplies—or maybe they're just expressing their support of their second-amendment rights. Patch stopped by the gun shop last week to ask about business in light of President Obama's gun control plans. READ MORE: Sarah McCoy, wife of owner Mark McCoy, said "We made a run Tuesday to buy cases of 9mm, and it's gone. Our shelves over there, with the .223, we can't keep it. Our shelves were pretty empty." Ted Brand, the manager of the shop, assured Patch that recent talks of new control legislation have not changed his mind about the expansion of the store or the addition of an …

The President is urging Americans to put pressure on Congress to pass measures such as universal background checks on gun sales, a ban on military-style assault rifles and limiting the capacity of ammunition magazines. READ MORE: President Obama's Gun Control Plan Released Wednesday The NRA's press release states that "attacking firearms and ignoring children is not a solution to the crisis we face as a nation." University City Mayor Shelley Welsch joined the ranks of several U.S. mayors Wednesday when she voiced support for President Barack Obama's gun control plan in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, CT. The president issued 23 executive actions and is urging Americans to put pressure on Congress to pass his proposed changes, including universal background checks on gun sales, a ban military-style assault rifles and limited ammunition magazines. Welsch, a member of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition, issued a statement through the organization shortly after Obama spoke. "There are 33 Americans murdered with guns every day, and there's something we can do to stop the bloodshed. So why in the world would we …

"On 01/19/13 go to your local gun store, gun range or gun show with your Constitution, American flags and your 'Hands Off My Guns' sign to send a loud and clear message to Congress and President Barack Obama," says coalition website.
A conservative group is hoping that tens of thousands turn out to show their support for gun ownership with their pocketbooks and picket signs the day before President Barack Obama is sworn in for a second term. The group, a coalition brought together for the event, declared Jan. 19 "Gun Appreciation Day." The hope is that Americans nationwide will show their support for gun ownership by turning out en masse at gun stores, ranges and shows from coast to coast. “The Obama administration has shown that it is more than willing to trample the Constitution to impose its dictates upon the American people,” said Gun Appreciation Day chairman Larry Ward in a press release. The day comes as the gun control debate becomes more divisive. This past …

Following the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT, should we expect to see stricter laws regarding gun purchases in the United States?
The question reemerges after every mass shooting in America: are more stringent gun control laws necessary to prevent future shootings? It's a question that was posed after the shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, CO in July. And as the national conversation continues to focus on the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT, it's a question being asked again. So far, lawmakers in Missouri have been divided on how to respond. As KMOX reported on Thursday, Rep. Stacey Newman (D-Richmond Heights) is calling for the implementation of required background checks for people who buy firearms at gun shows. Meanwhile, other Missouri lawmakers are supporting a bill that would allow school officials with concealed carry …

The St. Louis area represents both extremes in the debate in a single week.
There's no way to avoid it. The gun control debate re-emerges with every shooting like the one on Friday morning in Aurora, CO: A man kills 12 and wounds more than 50 in a movie theater at a premiere of the latest Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises." On one end of the gun debate, Missouri Rep. John McCaherty (R-90th District), of High Ridge, is set to raffle off the civilian version of the military M16 rifle at a fundraising dinner Aug. 27. The rifle is a legally owned AR15 rifle that was given to him by the NRA. Meanwhile, on the other end of the debate over guns — legal or otherwise — only two mayors in the area have joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns: St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and University City Mayor Shelley Welsch. (It should be…
